JPEG vs JPG — what is the difference?
There is no difference. JPEG and JPG refer to exactly the same image format — the Joint Photographic Experts Group standard for lossy image compression. The only distinction is the file extension length.
Why two extensions?
Early versions of Windows (DOS/FAT) only allowed three-character file extensions. The four-letter .jpeg became .jpg on Windows. Mac and Unix systems always supported .jpeg.
Are the files identical?
Yes — a .jpeg file renamed to .jpg is byte-for-byte identical. No re-encoding, no quality loss, no difference in how browsers or apps handle them.
When should I use JPG?
Use .jpg for maximum compatibility, especially if uploading to older systems, CMS platforms, or sharing with people on Windows who might see the extension.
When does format matter?
For photos and complex images, JPG is great. For images with text, sharp edges, or transparency, PNG preserves more detail. For the web, WebP is smaller than both.
